The timeline for the launch of a regional ferry service has moved up! Connect Caribe is a private-sector-led initiative aimed at improving sea transport in the Caribbean. They announced yesterday that after entering into a partnership with Jampur Group, a shipping conglomerate based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, they could begin cargo shipping as early as August of September 2024. The Connect Caribe Ferry Service should be up and running by September. Word of this came from Chairman Ambassador Dr. Andre Thomas. He told a media conference at the Wisdom Centre today they have entered into a partnership with Jampro, a shipping company in the United Arad Emirates and they are into phase two of the initiative. The chairman says the initiative is ahead of schedule and has provided details about the number of ships which will start the ferry service. St. Kitts and Nevis will be among first phase countries to be serviced by an intra-regional cargo/passenger service that is a private sector led initiative. Called Connect Caribe, the service investors involve a consortium of partners bring years of experience in areas such as logistics, inter-island ferry services, and travel related services.

There is a private sector-led attempt being formed to improve intra-regional travel by sea in the Caribbean. In Barbados on Tuesday, a consortium of Caribbean based companies came together to launch Connect Caribe, which aims to ferry passengers, light and heavy cargo, while establishing an e-commerce platform for Caribbean businesses. Private sector-led efforts to create a regional transport system interconnecting Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states have given life to a new ferry service – Connect Caribe – promising not only passenger movement but the shipment of cargo. Company executives, on Tuesday, announced the plans to commission three vessels for this purpose.

If all goes according to plan, Barbadians and other Caribbean nationals will have a private ferry service by year end to travel to select regional countries. The tentative timeline for the Connect Caribe Ferry, which is being operated by the Pleion Group, was announced by its Chairman and CEO, Ambassador Dr. Andre Thomas. It is a separate 50 million-plus US dollar venture that was announced recently by three Caribbean prime ministers. Over 270 people are expected to find jobs in the first phase of the project. Ambassador Thomas notes the number will increase as the different aspects are rolled out.
